Many people are interested in the difference between colleges and universities. The main difference is that colleges provide the 4-year degree (bachelor’s degree), and the universities offer also master’s degree and PhD. Colleges also includes the community colleges, which provide Associate degree (2 years of studying). The credits obtained in the community college can be transferred into the curriculum of traditional college.
The most popular degrees are bachelor’s degree, master’s degree and PhD. Bachelor’s degree is the program which lasts 4 years and focuses on one or two fields. There are two types of bachelor’s degree – the Bachelor of Science and Bachelor of Arts. Bachelor of Arts degree focuses on such disciplines as humanities and liberal arts; the Bachelor of Science degree focuses on engineering, science, business field and computer technologies. There are many majors which are provided be the bachelor’s degree: Finance, Biology, Foreign Languages, Engineering, Psychology, International Relationships, Philosophy, Business Administration, Management, Marketing, Accounting etc.

It is quite hard and continuous process of selecting the college. I collided with this problem several years ago and now I am ready to give some recommendations to the entrants. After narrowing the list to 14 universities by the criteria of good reputation, accreditation and location near big cities, I decided to pass on to the next step.
The following selection depended on the following criteria: funds of the parents, access to the scholarships and grants, abilities to earn the money with the help of on – campus work. There are many websites which contain the full information about the colleges. On these sites entrants can took virtual tour through the universities and examine all facilities they offer. Future students have to pay attention on such abilities as libraries, student government bodies, modern student housing, university events and activities. According to these criteria I narrowed the list up to 5 colleges.
The next step is to consult with the parents. I showed them a list of 5 colleges and asked for help. With the help of parents I narrowed the list up to 3 variants. For parents the main criteria were convenient location, good housing facilities, high quality of education and practical experience of teachers. After discussions with parents I filled in three applications, sent to the entrance examination and waited for the response.
After several weeks of waiting I received three acceptance letters from the colleges. With the help of my parents I decided to visit the colleges before to make the final decision. I needed three days to visit all three college campuses. After visiting of colleges it was quite easy to make the final decision. I chose the University of Texas which was located at Austin. The selecting of the college is very important process for the future career prospects of the person. This process needs a lot of time and efforts, but the result usually justifies the hopes.

I am Debbie Ross. The information which is presented below can help the entrants and their parents to make the right choice and to find the most appropriate college. Several years ago I was in the same situation and thought how I can change my life. It was quite hard to find a good college which will suit all my needs and requirements. The majority of my friends had already made the choice in contrast to me. My parents tried to help me with the search, but the deadlines approached. I coped with this task and main steps on the path to the college are described below.
1. The first step is to determinate with the career goals and choose the future major. For it the person has to understand what he likes and what not. I did not want to be a doctor, lawyer and dentist. I also exclude the engineering and architect major. After long period of deciding I chose four main directions – journalism, communications, information technologies and business management.
In majority of schools the entrants can consult with the school counselor concerning the major determination. It is very useful to pass the Career Assessment Test. It test helps the student to understand their strong sides and talents. After this test I understood that the best choice for me is business administration.
2. The next step is to match the courses with the colleges. First of all I formed a list of colleges which offer the course of Business Administration and have good reputation in the academic world. There are many services which can simplify the search. I used the Fiske Guide to Colleges. Finally, I had a list of 20 accredited colleges with good reputation. I narrowed the list of colleges to 14 by choosing those educational institutions which are located near big cities.

Not each and every one college paths are the equivalents. If you are not ready to throw yourself into a four-year university, then begin smaller. Go to your local community college, and rack up credits at a fraction of the cost. After filling out all the essential grants and fee waivers, you can pretty much focus on community college for free. If you would like to test the academic waters previous to jumping in the college pool, then a community college is ideal for you.
What if you are a working qualified who doesn’t have time to go to classes during the day? There are many online degree programs, and lots of colleges are now offering distant education options where you never have to be present at a single classroom session. Take classes at night through your internet connection. Work on your homework for the duration of the weekend. No matter who you are, or what your time (and financial) restraints are, you are able to find a degree program that’ll suit your specific instructive needs.
In case you’re debating whether or not to go to college, you have to make an individual preference based on your own instructive and career goals. No one is more qualified to make the decision than you are. University is an intensely individual knowledge, so in order to make the most of it you need to prefer a college and major that are right for you.
Not all and sundry requires a usual four-year university practice. If you’re uncertain whether or not college is right for you, try out a little bit first earlier than you commit multiple years of your life. Once you’ve made a choice, stick to it and follow through. Getting nearly all from your college knowledge is completely up to you.

Usually the beginning of the studies in the university is related with the new acquaintances and impressions. For majority of people the new collective, the pressure of the academic curriculum, the new conditions and surrounding provoke to the stressful state. There are many recipes how to avoid all these problems. The former students give the recommendations concerning the desirable behavior and tell the stories from the student’s life.
The best advice to join the new collective is to visit all the university parties and to begin the conversation with the other students. Usually it is quite easy for the attractive girls and boys to get to the university party and to swim with the current. But the majority of the students do not want to start new friendly relations; they want just to spend one or two pleasant evenings. Besides it is quite hard to converse with the people when the loud music plays.
The next variant to join the new company is to take part in the university sport events. There are many students in the universities who go in for sport, but it is quite difficult to start the conversation with the sportsmen too, because they are usually insolent and not very gregarious. The majority of them consider the others only like their fans and admirers.
The next way is to go to the bars or university clubs. But usually the contingent of these bars consists of the people much older than the students and with other interests. So it is hard enough to find friends there.
The last method to find the friend is the websites and chats. It is more effective, convenient and safer way of the search. There are some websites in the internet, which are devoted to the communication of the college students. It is easy to find the person with the similar interests there and to communicate before the meeting in the reality.
