Those people, who want to study in the USA, usually have many questions concerning the degrees, majors and educational system of the country. Below some facts which refer to this questions are described.

Many people are interested in the difference between colleges and universities. The main difference is that colleges provide the 4-year degree (bachelor’s degree), and the universities offer also master’s degree and PhD. Colleges also includes the community colleges, which provide Associate degree (2 years of studying). The credits obtained in the community college can be transferred into the curriculum of traditional college.

The most popular degrees are bachelor’s degree, master’s degree and PhD. Bachelor’s degree is the program which lasts 4 years and focuses on one or two fields. There are two types of bachelor’s degree – the Bachelor of Science and Bachelor of Arts. Bachelor of Arts degree focuses on such disciplines as humanities and liberal arts; the Bachelor of Science degree focuses on engineering, science, business field and computer technologies. There are many majors which are provided be the bachelor’s degree: Finance, Biology, Foreign Languages, Engineering, Psychology, International Relationships, Philosophy, Business Administration, Management, Marketing, Accounting etc.

Besides the major some universities offer also to study the minor. In fact the minor if the academic field which the student studies additionally to the major. The minor needs less time and efforts. The curriculum of minors usually contains several courses.

The main difference between the educational system in the USA and in other countries is that the students which study in American universities have to attend many additional courses besides the disciplines which refer to the main major. There are some additional courses which must be attended by all students, such as Foreign Languages, Science, Mathematics, Social Studies and Humanities. These additional courses allow students to extend their mental outlook.
